A workshop for amateur, student and professional musicians alike interested in learning about, furthering existing knowledge of and/or reading from the original notation of some of the music that Piffaro will perform in its weekend concerts, among other selections. The workshop will offer sessions for varied levels of interest and skills, from the very beginner to the confidently fluent.
Piffaro members Bob Wiemken, Joan Kimball, Christa Patton, Greg Ingles, Priscilla Herreid
For the very beginner interested in learning to read from the notation of the late 16th and early 17th century. Nothing will be taken for granted at this introductory level, yet with the goal of gaining sufficient ability by the end of the workshop to read single lines of music in its original form.
For those with an existing fluency, this course will review the fundamentals and then leap directly into reading from the large format manuscripts and part books from which the repertoire will be selected. This course will assume a basic ability to read the various C, F and G clefs in which the music was written and is preserved.
For singers who would love to see and read from the original sources. Both facsimile and modern editions of the music will be available for comparison, giving insight into the role and challenges faced by the chapel singers in the late 16th century.
Pitch for the workshop will be A = 440. Historical and modern instruments are welcome in all courses.
Participants should bring instruments and stands. Music will be provided.
