Martin Bernstein, a student of Nina Stern and a native of Brooklyn, NY, is the winner of Piffaro’s 2013 National Recorder Competition, where he impressed the judges with his “fine-tuned musicality and the technical ability to show [the audience] what he found compelling in the music”. Bernstein began studying recorder at the age of 5 with Charles Sibirsky and is furthering his recorder training by attending workshops and master classes with international soloists such as Marion Verbruggen, Gwyn Roberts, Saskia Coolen, Daphna Mor, John Tyson, Reine-Marie Verhagen, and Piffaro’s own Joan Kimball. He attended Amherst Early Music’s Memorial Day workshop with Han Tol, and the Virtuoso Recorder Program at Amherst’s summer festival. In June he performed on the American Recorder Society’s Next Generation Concert at the Boston Early Music Festival and the next day played for Paul Leenhout’s master class, one of only four chosen for that honor. Three years ago he founded a chamber music group at his high school devoted to exposing students to and performing early music.
Martin Bernstein appears on the Return of the Pipers program on October 18, 29, and 20.
