Golden Age Spain and Portugal resounded with music of the ministriles – the Renaissance wind players who held prominent roles in the cultural fabric of these countries. Piffaro pays homage to our Spanish and Portuguese forebears in a program that explores some of the vast repertoire from this time – or some of what still exists. Glorious music by the biggest names of the era (Francisco Guerrero, Cristóbal de Morales) will be played alongside some of the few surviving works by Portuguese masters (Manuel Mendes, Melchor Robledo) – and plenty in between. Our band is expanded by wind players Georgeanne Banker, Héloïse Degrugillier, Sian Ricketts, and Kelsey Schilling.

Playlist

  • From the Lerma wind band manuscript, Archivo de San Pedro – liturgical music by Philippe Rogier and Alonso Lobo
  • Simile est regnum caelorum, Francisco Guerrero
  • O beata Maria, Vicente Lusitano
  • Benedicamus Domino, Aires Fernandez
  • songs from the Cancionero de Belém
